Black Jack – also known as ‘Chemin de Fer’ and ‘pontoon’ – is a card game that is commonly found in a betting house with people trying their luck on achieving the elusive ‘21′. It is widely believed that the game started in France through the 17th century. However, as with most other casino games the precise development of the game is still a mystery.

Black jack was brought to the U.S. following the French Revolution, but the game didn’t become popular in the gambling dens until the casino provided bonus payouts. This was the only way that seemed to get people wagering on pontoon. One variation on the reward pay out was for a gambler to make ‘21′ with the black jack card (valued at ten points) and an ace (valued at eleven points). With the growing popularity of the game the pay outs were canceled but the name of the game ‘pontoon’ remained.

Black jack isn’t simply about achieving a straight ‘21′, but the primary adventure is to defeat the dealer without busting. The betting house clearly has a house edge over the chemin de fer players over the long term, but with black jack the gambler retains an element of choice.

Since 1931 when America initial legalized gambling, chemin de fer has grown into a traditional casino game. Furthermore, it is the blending of both ability and mathematics utilized in blackjack that has caused the game to be massively liked. Pontoon affords an attractive adventure to any scientist, math guy or betting player wanting to analyze the strategy of the game.
